IGNOU MBAHM Project: What the HR Specialisation Actually Changes in MMPP-001

The IGNOU MBAHM project is the eight-credit MMPP-001 Project Report registered in Semester 3 of the MBA (Human Resources Management) programme. It requires an approved synopsis, an eligible HR guide, and a report of roughly 50 to 60 double spaced pages submitted to the Student Evaluation Division.

Start here

What is the IGNOU MBAHM project, and which course code covers it?

The IGNOU MBAHM project is the course MMPP-001, titled Project Report, which Indira Gandhi National Open University lists as an eight-credit project course in Semester 3 of the Master of Business Administration (Human Resources Management) programme run by the School of Management Studies. IGNOU treats MMPP-001 as equivalent to two courses but registers it as a single course, and issues no printed study material for it. The project study should be on a topic preferably drawn from the learner’s area of specialisation, which for an MBAHM learner means human resource management. Project work cannot begin until the synopsis is approved. The learner selects a topic and an eligible guide, sends a signed Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal together with the guide’s bio-data to the Regional Director of the respective Regional Centre, and waits for written communication of approval before starting the study.

There is no separate HR project course. MMPP-001 is the single project registration shared by the MBA and by every one of its specialisation exit programmes, so an MBAHM learner and an MBAFM learner register the same code, pay the same fee and read the same guidelines document. What separates them is not the code. It is the subject area declared on the proforma, the specialisation the guide must hold, and the body of HR theory the study is expected to sit on.

That distinction is the whole point of this page. The mechanics of MMPP-001 are covered end to end in the IGNOU MBA project guide for MMPP-001, and the proposal paperwork is handled in detail on the MMPP-001 synopsis page. What follows is the layer on top of those: the decisions where being an MBAHM learner changes the correct answer.

Set the record straight

MBAHM stands for Human Resources Management, not Hospitality Management

Several pages currently ranking for this keyword expand MBAHM as Hospitality Management, and one of them tells learners to pick a topic related to hospitality. That advice sends an HR learner toward a subject area their guide may not be eligible to supervise.

IGNOU’s own programme page settles it. The School of Management Studies lists MBAHM as Master of Business Administration (Human Resources Management), an AICTE recognised ODL programme with a minimum duration of 24 months and a maximum of 48 months. The specialisation courses confirm the reading: Organisational Theory and Design, Human Resource Development, Industrial and Employment Relations, Compensation and Rewards Management, Human Resource Planning, Organisational Development and Change, Organisational Dynamics, and International Human Resource Management. Nothing in that list is hospitality.

Practical meaning: if a page tells you your MBAHM topic must relate to hospitality, stop reading that page. Verify the programme name against the IGNOU MBAHM programme page before you write a title on the proforma, because the title approved by the evaluator is the title your final report must carry.

The core difference

What actually changes in MMPP-001 because the specialisation is HR?

Four things change, and all four sit in documents the learner fills in by hand. The guidelines do not restate them for each specialisation, which is why they get missed.

Where an MBAHM learner’s answer differs from a generic MBA answer on the same MMPP-001 paperwork.
Decision pointWhat an MBAHM learner does
Subject Area box on the proformaThe guidelines list the options as HRM & OB, Accounting & Finance, Operations Management & Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, or Any Other. An HR study belongs under HRM & OB
Topic of the ProjectDrawn from the HR specialisation. IGNOU asks for a definitive title that communicates the subject matter being covered
Guide’s specialisationThe guidelines give the matching rule using marketing as the example: a marketing topic needs a supervisor with five years in marketing. Read across, an HR topic needs a supervisor with HR experience, and guides are asked to restrict guiding to their core specialisation
Choice of study typeComprehensive case study, inter-organisational study or field study. HR topics that need employee responses fall under field study, which forces a questionnaire and a sampling plan into the synopsis

BK Sahni, who has guided 5,00,000 students till date, notes that the Subject Area box is the field MBAHM learners most often leave blank or fill with the programme code, and that a proforma reaching the Regional Centre with an HR title but no declared subject area gives the evaluator no basis on which to test whether the proposed supervisor is the right specialist for the study.

Topic reservoir

Which HR areas can an MBAHM project be built on?

IGNOU does not publish an approved topic list for MMPP-001, and no third party can supply one. What it does publish is the MBAHM course structure, and that structure is the most defensible topic reservoir available, because every area in it is a subject the University has already accepted as part of the specialisation.

MBAHM specialisation courses on the IGNOU programme page, and the project territory each one opens.
Course codeCourse titleSemesterTerritory it supports
MMPH-001Organisational Theory and Design3Structure, design choices, organisational effectiveness
MMPH-002Human Resource Development3Training, development practice, HRD climate
MMPH-004Industrial and Employment Relations3Employer and employee relations, grievance handling
MMPH-007Compensation and Rewards Management3Pay structure, incentives, allowances, job evaluation
MMPH-003Human Resource Planning4Manpower forecasting, supply and demand balance
MMPH-005Organisational Development and Change4Change interventions, resistance, change agents
MMPH-006Organisational Dynamics4Role dynamics, power, cross-cultural dynamics
MMPH-009International Human Resource Management4Expatriate staffing, international HR practice

A topic anchored to one of these areas is easy to defend on the proforma and easy for an HR guide to supervise. A topic that strays outside them invites the evaluator to question both the subject area and the supervisor in the same reading.

A constraint worth respecting

Choose a topic you can actually collect data on. If access to an organisation’s HR records is uncertain, an inter-organisational comparison of published management practices is more defensible than a field study whose sample may never materialise.

Supervision

Who is eligible to guide an IGNOU MBAHM project?

The eligibility list in the MMPP-001 guidelines is short and it is not specialisation specific, which is precisely why HR learners get caught out by the specialisation note attached to it.

  1. Management faculty in the School of Management Studies at IGNOU Headquarters.
  2. Any approved Academic Counsellor of the Management Programme with relevant experience at a Study Centre. For approved counsellors, a bio-data is not required.
  3. Management faculty holding five years of postgraduate teaching experience.
  4. A professional holding a Master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with a minimum of five years of experience in the relevant area. If you identify your own guide, the bio-data of the proposed guide must be attached to the synopsis.

Two limits sit alongside that list. A guide may not supervise more than five learners at any given point of time, and the proforma asks the supervisor to declare how many they are currently guiding. The University pays the guide a token honorarium of Rs. 500 for guiding the learner, so a supervisor demanding a private fee is operating outside the scheme.

What the bio-data has to contain

IGNOU is specific here, and incomplete bio-data is a common cause of a proposal being returned. It must state the guide’s name and date of birth, full address and contact numbers for residence and current workplace, detailed educational qualifications naming the degrees with specialisation, the institution and the year of award along with percentage of marks, and detailed work experience in chronological order with designation, period and contactable addresses. If the signed original bio-data is missing, the proposal will not be entertained.

Length and contents

How long is the MBAHM project report, and what goes into it?

The official MMPP-001 guidelines put the report at about 50 to 60 double spaced typed pages, not exceeding approximately 18,000 words, excluding appendices and exhibits, with rational variation on either side permitted.

Two figures circulate for this course. Third party pages commonly quote 15,000 to 20,000 words. The document IGNOU currently links from the MBAHM programme page states approximately 18,000 words as the ceiling. Where the two disagree, the guidelines document is the one an evaluator holds, so write to 18,000 words and treat anything above it as risk.

The prescribed structure runs: introduction to the project with review of literature and brief details of the organisations under study; research methodology; results and discussion; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and direction for further research, which is optional; references and bibliography; and annexures or appendices, including the questionnaire used.

The methodology chapter carries more weight than most learners expect. It must set out the research design, the nature and source of data collected, the sample and sampling method with a rationale, the questionnaire and other methods used with their purpose, the reliability and validity of those tools, and the statistical tools used for data analysis. For an HR field study built on a Likert questionnaire, reliability and validity are not optional paragraphs.

What must be bound into the report

  • A cover page carrying the learner’s name and enrolment number, the guide’s name, and the title of the project.
  • A detailed table of contents with page numbers, and every page numbered to match it.
  • The approved proposal, the approved proforma and the guide’s bio-data, properly bound into the report. IGNOU states plainly that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted.
  • A Certificate of Originality signed and dated by both the learner and the guide. Its printed wording refers to the Master’s Degree in Business Administration, not to the specialisation, so an MBAHM learner uses the same certificate text unchanged.

Routing

Where does an MBAHM learner send the synopsis and the report?

To two different addresses. This is the single most common routing error on this course, because the two destinations sit on separate pages of the same document.

Destinations for ODL learners of MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF.
DocumentDestinationMark on the envelope
Synopsis with proforma and bio-dataThe Regional Director of your respective Regional CentreMMPP-001
Bound project reportThe Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by handPROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001

MBA (Online) learners are the exception: they submit both the synopsis and the report through the LMS portal. The MBAHM programme is offered in ODL mode, so the postal route above is the one that applies unless a Regional Centre notice tells you otherwise.

Where old and new guidance diverge

Some current pages describe uploading a single project PDF through an online portal. The MMPP-001 guidelines document that IGNOU currently links from the MBAHM programme page still prescribes a bound hard copy to the Registrar (SED) for ODL learners, and reserves portal submission for MBA (Online). Treat the linked guidelines as current for MBAHM, and confirm with your Regional Centre before choosing a route, because Regional Centre notices are issued session by session.

Once the report is received, a PR number is allotted and should be quoted in all correspondence with the Student Evaluation Division. Queries about the status of project reports go to the Assistant Registrar (SED) at Maidan Garhi.

Where proposals fail

What sends an MBAHM synopsis back for resubmission?

Non-approval is not a verdict on the idea. In most cases it is a paperwork failure that the guidelines already warn about.

  • Missing or unsigned bio-data. Without the guide’s signed original bio-data, the proposal is not entertained at all.
  • The supervisor is rejected while the synopsis is not. The proforma carries two independent decisions, one for the synopsis and one for the supervisor. If the guide is not approved, the learner must change guide and submit afresh with the new guide’s signature, and it counts as a new proposal.
  • A subject area that does not match the guide. An HR title supervised by a specialist in another field invites exactly the mismatch the guidelines warn against.
  • Objectives written as conclusions. IGNOU asks for objectives expressed neutrally, without implicit assumptions about what the research will find.
  • An enrolment number that has lapsed. If the maximum duration of four years is over, re-admission must be sought before sending the synopsis. If a synopsis was approved on an earlier enrolment number, approval has to be sought again on the new number, or the project report may not be accepted.
  • An incomplete proforma. The guidelines state that proposals incomplete in any respect will not be accepted.

On resubmission, send the revised proposal with a fresh proposal proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal, the proforma carrying the evaluator’s comments, and the Project Proposal number allotted by the Regional Centre.

Timing

How MMPP-001 fits the MBAHM Semester 3 load

Semester 3 is where the MBAHM workload peaks, and the calendar explains why. MMPP-001 is registered in Semester 3 alongside two core papers and four HR specialisation papers, which is also why Semester 3 costs Rs. 18,000 against Rs. 16,000 for each of the other three semesters.

One of those core papers matters to the project directly. MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions sits in the same Semester 3, and its four blocks cover research methodology, data collection and measurement, data presentation and analysis, and report writing and presentation. The course that teaches the method runs in the same semester as the study that needs it, so reading MMPC-015 early is the cheapest preparation available for MMPP-001.

On dates, IGNOU sets no last date for the synopsis: it may be submitted throughout the year, but only after registering for MMPP-001, so that at least eight to nine months remain for the work. Proposals reaching a Regional Centre more than six months after registration carry a warning that the centre will not be responsible for timely disposal. Approval or non-approval is communicated in writing within two to three months of receipt. The report itself may be submitted at any time, and the result follows the term-end cycle: a report submitted between 1 December and 31 May is declared with the June term-end examinations, and one submitted between 1 June and 30 November with the December examinations.

Common questions

IGNOU MBAHM project: frequently asked questions

Is the MBAHM project a different course from the MBA project?

No. MBAHM learners register MMPP-001, the same eight-credit Project Report course as MBA, MBAFM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF learners. The specialisation changes the subject area and the guide, not the course code.

What does MBAHM stand for?

Master of Business Administration (Human Resources Management), offered by the School of Management Studies. Some pages incorrectly expand it as Hospitality Management. The IGNOU programme page and the HR specialisation course codes confirm Human Resources Management.

How is the course code written in different places?

IGNOU writes it as MMPP-001. Learners commonly type MMPP 1, MMPP-01, MMPP1 or MMPP001, and older learners on the earlier syllabus may know the project as MS-100. The programme code appears as MBAHM on IGNOU pages and sometimes as MBAHRM or MBA HRM elsewhere. Write MMPP-001 and MBAHM on official paperwork.

Can a guide from a non-HR background supervise an MBAHM project?

The guidelines advise selecting a guide who is an active professional in the area of the selected topic, and ask guides to restrict supervision to their core specialisation. An approved Academic Counsellor of the Management Programme is eligible without submitting bio-data, but the topic and supervisor still have to sit together sensibly, since both are judged separately on the proforma.

What is the project fee for MMPP-001?

University policy from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards sets examination, practical and project fees at Rs. 500 per course. Confirm the current amount and the payment window with your Regional Centre, since fee notifications are issued session by session.

How long does synopsis approval take?

Written communication on approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. Proposals received more than six months after MMPP-001 registration carry no assurance of timely disposal, so submitting early protects the eight to nine month working window.

Is a viva-voce compulsory for the MBAHM project?

No. A learner may be asked to appear for a viva-voce if the evaluator recommends it, and will be intimated in that case. It is not a fixed step for every project.
