IGNOU MCOM Project for MCOP-001: Guidelines, Synopsis, Format and Submission
The IGNOU MCOM project for MCOP-001 is the six-credit project course in Semester 4 of the Master of Commerce programme. A learner picks a commerce research problem, gets the synopsis approved by the Regional Centre under an eligible guide, writes the report, uploads it as a single PDF and attends a viva-voce.
The short answer
What is the IGNOU MCOM project for MCOP-001?
MCOP-001 is the project course of the Master of Commerce programme at Indira Gandhi National Open University, run by the Discipline of Commerce in the School of Management Studies. M.Com is an 80-credit programme across four semesters, and MCOP-001 sits in Semester 4 carrying six credits. No printed study material is issued for it. The learner prepares a synopsis with an eligible guide and sends it to the Regional Director of the concerned Regional Centre, together with the signed Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal and the guide’s bio-data. The Regional Centre assigns a Project Proposal Number, and research begins only after that. The finished report is scanned into one PDF and uploaded on IGNOU’s online project submission portal inside the session window, with the approved proforma, the synopsis, the guide bio-data and the signed originality certificate inside the same file. A viva-voce follows.
| Course code | MCOP-001, also written informally as MCOP-01, MCOP 1 or MCOP1. Write MCOP-001 on every official document. |

Old booklet, current portal
Which MCOP-001 instructions still apply, and which belong to the old booklet?
Most confusion around MCOP-001 comes from one fact that competitor pages skip: the official project guidelines booklet for MCOP-001 carries the imprint SOMS-IGNOU/P.O. 5T/September 2012. Its academic requirements are still the requirements. Its routing instructions describe a postal era that the Student Evaluation Division has since replaced with an online portal. Reading the booklet as if every line were current is how learners end up posting a bound volume that nobody is waiting for.
| Item | In the printed booklet | What applies now |
|---|---|---|
| Synopsis routing | Post one copy of the proforma, synopsis and guide bio-data to the Regional Director, with MCOP-001 written prominently on the envelope | Unchanged for ODL learners. M.Com Online (MCOMOL) learners submit the synopsis through the LMS portal. |
| Report routing | A bound report posted so that it reaches the Student Evaluation Division, envelope marked PROJECT REPORT-MCOP-001 | IGNOU activates an online project submission portal for each Term-End Examination session. The complete report is uploaded as one PDF. Reports sent by email are not considered for evaluation. |
| Number of copies | Send one copy only and retain a copy yourself | Same principle. One upload, and you keep your own copy. Claims that two hard copies must go to the Registrar do not match the booklet. |
| Guide remuneration | Rs. 300 per student, claimed on the Remuneration Bill (Annexure III), submitted in a separate envelope with the report | Still the published figure. It is money the university pays the guide, not a fee the learner pays. |
| Project evaluation fee | Not mentioned; the fee did not exist in 2012 | Rs. 500 per course for project work above 4 credits, paid with the Term-End Examination form, for learners admitted from the January 2023 cycle onwards. |
| Certificate of Originality | The printed annexure text names the Master’s Degree in Business Administration, a leftover from the shared School of Management Studies annexure set | Ask your guide and Regional Centre which wording to submit before you reproduce the annexure unchanged. |
The booklet and the portal are both official, and they disagree on routing because they were written fourteen years apart. Treat the booklet as the source for what the work must contain, and the current session notification on ignou.ac.in as the source for where it goes and by when. Where the two conflict on process, the current notification wins.
Supervision
Who can sign as the MCOP-001 guide, and what is the five-student rule?
MCOP-001 is supervised research, and the supervisor has to be eligible before anyone reads the proposal. The official MCOP-001 guidelines accept a guide from any of these categories:
- Members of the Commerce faculty in the School of Management Studies at IGNOU Headquarters.
- Approved academic counsellors of the M.Com programme with around five years of counselling experience at recognised study centres.
- Teachers in Commerce or Management, at Professor, Associate Professor or Lecturer level, with around five years of postgraduate teaching experience.
- Professionals holding a Master’s degree in a relevant field with around five years of relevant experience, for example practising chartered accountants, company secretaries or senior finance professionals.
Two rules sit alongside the eligibility list and both appear on the proforma itself. A supervisor is expected to restrict the number of students being guided to five at any given point of time, and the number currently being guided has to be declared on Annexure-I. Ask a prospective guide that question early, because a guide already at the limit cannot take your file this session, and finding that out after the envelope has gone costs a cycle.
The MCOP-001 guidelines state plainly that if the complete and signed bio-data of the supervisor is not enclosed, the proposal will not be entertained, and that if the duly signed original bio-data and Proforma for Approval are not submitted, the synopsis shall be rejected. An unsigned sheet, a photocopied signature or an undated bio-data is treated as a missing document. The remuneration payable for guidance is Rs. 300 per student, so a guide asking for a large private fee is charging for private tutoring, not for an IGNOU obligation.
Synopsis
What must the MCOP-001 synopsis contain, and what goes in the envelope?
The synopsis is prepared in consultation with the guide, not written alone and shown afterwards. The official guidelines require it to set out the objectives and the research methodology of the proposed study, with full detail of the rationale, the sampling and the instruments. The accepted sequence runs:
- Title. Specific, and identical to the title that will appear on the final report.
- Introduction. A short background to the subject area chosen.
- Rationale. Why this problem, and what gap the study addresses.
- Review of literature. The studies the work builds on, ending in that gap.
- Objectives. Stated precisely, in behavioural terms, worded neutrally rather than as a conclusion waiting to be confirmed.
- Research methodology. Design, data source, population and sample or the named documents and years, sampling technique, instrument and analysis tools.
- Scope and limitations. Honest boundaries of the study.
- Chapter plan. The proposed structure of the report.
- References. In one consistent citation style.
Three documents travel together: the duly filled Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (Annexure-I) signed and dated by both the learner and the guide, the guide’s detailed bio-data signed in original, and the synopsis itself. Send one copy and keep one. The envelope carries MCOP-001 written prominently and is addressed to the Regional Director of the concerned Regional Centre. M.Com Online learners route the same set through the LMS portal instead.
| Field on the proforma | What it is for | Where it goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Project Proposal No. | Assigned by the Regional Centre, not by the learner | Learners fill it in or invent one. Leave it blank. |
| Subject area | Places the study with the right evaluator | Left vague, so the file is routed slowly |
| Topic of the project | Becomes the locked title of the final report | Written loosely, then quietly edited during writing |
| Name and address of the guide | Preferably the guide’s official address | A personal address given where an institutional one exists |
| Is the supervisor an academic counsellor of the Management Programme? | Decides which eligibility route applies | Answered yes without the study centre code and the counselled courses |
| Number of students being guided | Declares the guide against the five-student expectation | Left blank, which reads as an incomplete proforma |
| Signatures and dates, student and supervisor | Makes the proposal valid | Signed but undated, or signed in one place only |
The Regional Centre assigns a Project Proposal Number when the synopsis is approved. That number identifies the project through every later step. Record it the moment it arrives, and treat the date you receive it as the real start date of your research, not the date you chose the topic.
What goes wrong
Why do MCOP-001 proposals get rejected before the research is read?
The MCOP-001 guidelines carry their own rejection clauses, and they are administrative rather than academic. A project synopsis incomplete in any respect shall be rejected. A missing or unsigned guide bio-data means the proposal will not be entertained. On the report side, IGNOU’s project portal states that incomplete submissions will not be considered for evaluation, that incomplete uploads are removed from the portal once the last date is over and have to be uploaded again in the next session, and that the university will not correspond about an incomplete report after the last date.
- Research started before approval. Work done ahead of the Project Proposal Number has to match whatever is finally approved, and often does not.
- Objectives and methodology describing two different studies. Perception objectives paired with a methodology that lists only annual reports is the most common mismatch in commerce proposals.
- A title that drifts. The final report must carry the approved title. No change is permitted at submission, so a small edit made while writing turns into a query.
- Vague sources. Books, journals and websites is not a source list. Name the documents, the issuing bodies and the years.
- Missing annexure or receipt. An unsigned originality certificate, an absent guide bio-data or a missing fee receipt each stall the file.
- Copied content. Both learner and guide certify originality. Ready-made reports circulating online are submitted by many learners in one session, and the duplication is visible to evaluators.
Topics
How to choose IGNOU MCOM project topics for MCOP-001
A workable MCOP-001 topic clears four tests at once. It belongs to commerce, it holds the learner’s interest for months, the data behind it can actually be obtained, and it is narrow enough to finish inside one session. Broad titles such as a study of Indian banking fail the last two immediately. Narrow the subject, the unit of study and the period, and the topic becomes finishable.
| Area | Sample project titles | Usual data source |
|---|---|---|
| Financial management | Working capital management in a selected manufacturing company; liquidity and profitability of two FMCG firms compared | Published annual reports |
| Accounting and reporting | Ind AS disclosure compliance in selected listed companies; segment reporting practice in the auto sector | Annual reports, regulatory filings |
| Taxation | Tax-saving preferences of salaried employees in a selected district; awareness of the new tax regime among first-time filers | Questionnaire survey |
| Banking and finance | Trend of non-performing assets in selected public sector banks; customer adoption of digital banking channels | RBI publications, or survey |
| Investment and capital markets | Investment behaviour of retail mutual fund investors; performance evaluation of selected equity schemes | Survey, or scheme factsheets |
| Marketing | Consumer buying behaviour in a product category in a selected city; effectiveness of digital promotion for a small retailer | Questionnaire survey |
| Human resources | Employee retention practice in a selected service organisation; job satisfaction among staff of a chosen firm | Structured questionnaire |
| E-commerce and digital trade | Growth of online retail in a selected category; consumer trust in digital payment platforms | Industry reports, or survey |
These are starting points, not a list to lift. Two learners at one Regional Centre submitting an identical title in the same session is exactly the pattern that draws attention. Anchor the title to a named company, a named district or a stated period and the topic becomes yours. Settle the primary-versus-secondary data question before the synopsis goes out, because that choice is written into the methodology that gets approved, and changing it later means changing an approved document.
Report format
What is the MCOP-001 project report format, and how long should it be?
The MCOP-001 report is a dissertation, so it follows a research structure rather than an assignment layout. A chapter plan that guides generally accept runs:
- Introduction. Background, statement of the problem, rationale, significance.
- Review of literature. Prior studies arranged thematically, ending in the gap.
- Research methodology. Design, objectives restated, data sources, sampling, instrument, analysis tools, limitations.
- Data analysis and interpretation. Tables and charts with the interpretation written beneath each one, not gathered at the end.
- Findings, conclusion and suggestions. Findings tied back to each objective, then practical recommendations and scope for further research.
- References and annexures. One consistent citation style, then the questionnaire or the source-wise data tables.
On presentation, the guidelines specify A4 paper typed in double space, prepared as a bound volume for the postal route. The cover page carries the project title, the course code written as MCOP-001: Project, the learner’s name and enrolment number, the guide’s name, the school and the university.
What must be inside the report before it is finalised
- Cover page with the details listed above.
- The approved Project Proposal Proforma, in original.
- The approved synopsis.
- The guide’s bio-data.
- The Certificate of Originality, signed and dated by both the learner and the guide.
- A copy of the project evaluation fee receipt.
- A table of contents whose page numbers match the document.
BK Sahni, who has guided 5,00,000 students till date, notes that approved MCOP-001 dissertations most often run to roughly 60 to 80 typed pages excluding annexures, but that this is settled convention rather than a figure printed in the MCOP-001 booklet, which is why the word counts quoted on different websites disagree so widely. No official page limit or word limit is published for MCOP-001. The length that matters is the one your guide will sign.
Money
What does MCOP-001 cost, and who pays whom?
Two separate amounts get confused with each other constantly, and they move in opposite directions. One is a fee the learner pays the university. The other is an honorarium the university pays the guide.
| Item | Amount | Direction and timing |
|---|---|---|
| Project evaluation fee, project work above 4 credits | Rs. 500 per course | Learner pays IGNOU, along with the Term-End Examination form. MCOP-001 carries 6 credits, so this is the band that applies. |
| Project evaluation fee, project work up to 4 credits | Rs. 300 per course | Shown for contrast. It does not apply to MCOP-001. |
| Guide remuneration for project guidance | Rs. 300 per student | IGNOU pays the guide, claimed on the Remuneration Bill (Annexure III). |
The project evaluation fee was introduced by the Student Evaluation Division for learners admitted from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards, which is why older guides do not mention it and why some learners on earlier admission cycles will not see it on their form. The receipt is submitted with the project report, so keep the acknowledgement rather than only the bank message. If the fee applies to you and is not paid, the report is not taken up for evaluation. Confirm the current amount on the examination form for your own session before you pay.
Submission
How is the MCOP-001 report uploaded, and what is the last date?
IGNOU routes final project, dissertation and internship reports through an online project submission portal that the Student Evaluation Division activates separately for each Term-End Examination session. The complete report is scanned into one PDF and uploaded there. Synopses and assignments are not uploaded on the project portal at all.
- Check the alerts or announcements section of ignou.ac.in for the active project submission link for your session.
- Log in with your enrolment number, date of birth and programme.
- Read the on-page instructions, which change slightly between sessions.
- Upload the complete report as a single PDF, with the approved proforma, the synopsis, the guide’s bio-data and the signed originality certificate already inside it.
- Submit, then save the on-screen confirmation and the acknowledgement email.
Project reports have historically been accepted up to 31 May for evaluation with the June Term-End Examination and up to 30 November for the December Term-End Examination, and IGNOU has extended those dates in several sessions. For the June 2026 cycle the Student Evaluation Division extended the last date to 15 June 2026. Because the date is fixed by notification each session, confirm the current one on the official portal before uploading rather than working from a date quoted on any website, including this one. The same discipline applies across programmes, which is why the wider IGNOU project guide starts every submission section with the session notification rather than a fixed calendar.
Viva-voce
What happens at the MCOP-001 viva-voce?
Evaluation has two parts. The report is assessed on the quality of the problem statement, the fit between objectives and methodology, the handling of data, the strength of the analysis and the practical value of the conclusions. The viva-voce is then conducted by faculty under the concerned Regional Centre, in person or remotely depending on the session, and learners are usually contacted by email or phone to schedule it.
The viva is not a memory test. It checks ownership. Questions cluster around why this topic, why this method, why this sample or this period, what the main finding was, and what the recommendation follows from. A learner who can walk through the analysis chapter without reading it aloud is prepared. Marks weightage between report and viva is quoted differently on different websites and is not printed in the MCOP-001 booklet, so confirm it in your own programme guide rather than trusting a number found online.
The official MCOP-001 project guidelines and the annexure formats are published on eGyanKosh, and the M.Com programme structure, the session notifications and the active project portal link sit on ignou.ac.in. Learners working on a different programme code will find the same checkpoints in a different order, which is set out in the IGNOU MBA project guide for MMPP-001.
Frequently asked
IGNOU MCOM project MCOP-001: frequently asked questions
What is the course code for the IGNOU M.Com project?
The course code is MCOP-001. It is often written informally as MCOP-01, MCOP 1 or MCOP1 on websites and even on some study centre notices, but MCOP-001 is the form to use on the Proforma for Approval, the cover page, the envelope and the online submission portal. Learners on an M.Com specialisation variant should confirm the project code printed in their own programme guide, since several M.Com families share course codes.
How many credits is MCOP-001 and in which semester does it fall?
MCOP-001 carries six credits and falls in Semester 4 of the M.Com programme, which is an 80-credit programme spread over four semesters under the School of Management Studies. No printed study material is supplied for the course. The learner carries out supervised research instead.
Is the MCOP-001 synopsis submitted to the Regional Centre or online?
The synopsis, the signed Proforma for Approval and the guide’s bio-data go to the Regional Director of the concerned Regional Centre for ODL learners, while M.Com Online learners submit through the LMS portal. The final report is a separate step and goes through IGNOU’s online project submission portal. Confirm the current instruction for your session, because routing has changed since the guidelines booklet was printed.
What is the project evaluation fee for MCOP-001?
IGNOU charges Rs. 300 per course for project work up to 4 credits and Rs. 500 per course for project work above 4 credits, paid along with the Term-End Examination form. MCOP-001 carries six credits, so the Rs. 500 band applies. The fee was introduced for learners admitted from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards, and the receipt is submitted with the project report. Confirm the current amount on the examination form for your session.
What is the last date for MCOP-001 project submission?
Project reports have historically been accepted up to 31 May for evaluation with the June Term-End Examination and up to 30 November for the December Term-End Examination, and IGNOU has extended these dates in several sessions, including an extension to 15 June 2026 for the June 2026 cycle. The exact last date is fixed by notification each session, so confirm it on ignou.ac.in and the project portal before uploading.
Who can be the guide for an MCOP-001 project, and how many students can one guide take?
Eligible guides include Commerce faculty in the School of Management Studies at IGNOU Headquarters, approved M.Com academic counsellors with around five years of counselling experience, teachers in Commerce or Management with around five years of postgraduate teaching experience, and professionals holding a relevant Master’s degree with around five years of relevant experience. A supervisor is expected to guide no more than five students at any given point of time, and the number currently being guided is declared on the proforma. The proposal will not be entertained without the guide’s complete signed bio-data.
Can a ready-made MCOP-001 sample project or a sample synopsis PDF be submitted?
No. Both the learner and the guide sign a Certificate of Originality declaring that the work has not been submitted earlier to this or any other university. Sample reports circulating online are downloaded by many learners in the same session, and repeated submissions are visible to evaluators. Use the official annexure formats and the guidelines document on eGyanKosh as the template, and keep the research your own.
What happens if the MCOP-001 project is rejected or the upload is incomplete?
A proposal that is not approved comes back with the reason and can be revised and resubmitted with the guide’s countersignature. An incomplete report upload is removed from the portal once the last date passes and has to be uploaded again in the next session, and the university does not correspond about incomplete submissions after that date. Resubmission does not end the programme, but each round costs a full evaluation cycle, which is the practical argument for starting the synopsis in Semester 3.
This page is independent study-help guidance and is not the official IGNOU website. Course requirements, submission windows, portals and fees are set by IGNOU and can change between sessions. Verify every procedural detail against the current MCOP-001 project guidelines, the notifications on ignou.ac.in and your Regional Centre before you submit.
