IGNOU MBF Project (MMPP-001): The Rules That Apply Only to Banking and Finance Learners

The IGNOU MBF project is MMPP-001, an 8-credit Project Report course placed in Semester 3 of the MBA (Banking and Finance) programme. MBF learners in the ODL mode send the synopsis to their Regional Director and the bound report to the Registrar (SED). No JAIIB or CAIIB exemption covers this course.

What is the IGNOU MBF project?

The IGNOU MBF project is course MMPP-001, titled Project Report, in the Master of Business Administration (Banking and Finance) programme of the School of Management Studies at Indira Gandhi National Open University. MMPP-001 carries eight credits, is placed in Semester 3, and is described by the university as equivalent to two courses, although for registration purposes it is treated as a single course. No printed study material is issued for it. The learner selects a guide who meets the published eligibility criteria, prepares a synopsis in consultation with that guide, submits it with the Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal to the Regional Director, and may begin the study only after written approval arrives. The finished work is a bound report of roughly 50 to 60 double-spaced pages sent to the Registrar of the Student Evaluation Division. The same course code MMPP-001 applies to MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF learners.

That shared code is why so much of the advice an MBF learner finds online is written for somebody else. An MBF learner sits the project alongside banking courses, may hold a JAIIB or CAIIB qualification, and fills a proforma whose subject-area list does not contain the word “banking” anywhere on it. This page covers the parts of MMPP-001 that change when the programme is MBF.

The two MMPP-001 documents travel to two different offices. Mixing them up is the most avoidable delay in this course.

Programme position

Why does the MBF project sit in Semester 3, not the final semester?

Because the official MBF programme structure places it there. The IGNOU programme page lists MMPP-001 under Semester 3, alongside MMPC-015 Research Methodology for Management Decisions, MMPC-016 International Business Management, MMPB-001 Bank Financial Management, MMPB-004 Risk Management in Banks, MMPB-006 Corporate Governance in Banking and Financial Sector, and MMPF-006 Management of Financial Services.

Much of the guidance circulating online calls MMPP-001 a final-semester course. For MBF that is wrong in a way that costs time. The guideline explains the logic: the proposal should reach the Regional Centre after registration for MMPP-001 so the learner gets at least eight to nine months to complete the work and submit before the fourth semester expires. Registration sits in Semester 3 precisely so the work can run into Semester 4. Treating it as a Semester 4 course removes that runway.

BK Sahni, who has guided 5,00,000 students till date, notes that this single misreading is the most common reason an MBF learner reaches the fourth semester with no approved proposal in hand.

The official MBF fee structure points the same way: three semesters are priced at one amount and Semester 3, which carries the eight-credit project course, at a higher one. Confirm current figures before paying.

The banker’s question

Does JAIIB or CAIIB credit transfer cover MMPP-001?

No. The MMPP-001 project course is not eligible for credit transfer or exemption against any JAIIB or CAIIB subject.

Under the IGNOU and IIBF arrangement, an MBA (Banking and Finance) learner may claim credit transfer for up to five of the twenty-eight MBF courses against IIBF subjects completed under the revised 2023 syllabus. The official mapping scheme lists exactly which five, and the project course is not among them.

The five MBF courses eligible for credit transfer against IIBF qualifications, per the official IGNOU credit transfer form and its Annexure 1
MBF course of IGNOURevised 2023 JAIIB or CAIIB subject of IIBF
MMPC-004: Accounting for ManagersAccounting and Financial Management for Bankers (JAIIB)
MMPC-005: Quantitative Analysis for Managerial ApplicationsAdvanced Bank Management (CAIIB)
MMPC-014: Financial ManagementAdvanced Business and Financial Management (CAIIB)
MMPB-003: Information Technology and Digital BankingInformation Technology and Digital Banking (CAIIB)
MMPB-004: Risk Management in BanksRisk Management (CAIIB)

The consequence is the part almost nobody spells out. Annexure 1 of that form states that the grade for a credit-transferred course is calculated from the average grade of the courses the learner actually completed at IGNOU. MMPP-001 is one of those, and it is worth eight credits rather than four. For a banker who has exempted five papers, the project grade does not only count for itself: it feeds the average that decides the grade shown against the exempted papers.

Also worth knowing: the same Annexure states that credit-transfer candidates pay the full programme fee, with no separate charge for seeking the transfer. Exemption removes assignments and term-end examinations for those five courses. It does not reduce the fee, and it does not touch MMPP-001.

Proforma trap

Which subject area should an MBF banking topic be filed under?

The Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001) has a field called Subject Area, and the guideline gives the accepted list: HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, or Any Other with a specification.

Banking is not on that list, and the instinct is to write “Banking and Finance” in the box and move on. The guideline is explicit about how the field works: it asks for the broad subject area, and gives the worked example that a project on the financial performance of a company has “Finance” as its subject area. The Subject Area describes the discipline of the study, not the industry it is set in.

How common MBF study types map onto the official Subject Area options on the MMPP-001 proforma
If the MBF study is aboutSubject Area to enter
Non-performing assets, capital adequacy, profitability or financial performance of a bankAccounting and Finance
Credit risk, market risk or operational risk frameworks in a bankAccounting and Finance
Customer adoption of digital payments, UPI or mobile bankingMarketing, or Operations Management and Information System, depending on the objectives
Cross-selling, branch service quality or financial product promotionMarketing
Employee attrition, training or performance appraisal inside a bankHRM and OB
Core banking systems, turnaround time or process efficiencyOperations Management and Information System
Board composition, disclosure practice or governance in banks and NBFCsCorporate Management, or Any Other with the area specified

The guideline also asks that the study sit in the learner’s area of specialisation, and that guides restrict their guiding to their own core area. Read together, the Subject Area on the proforma, the topic, and the guide’s expertise on the bio-data should all point one way. A risk-management title supported by a guide whose bio-data shows only marketing experience gives the evaluator a visible mismatch to act on.

Supervisor and money

Who can guide an MBF project, and which way does the money flow?

Four categories are eligible to guide MMPP-001: management faculty at the School of Management Studies at IGNOU headquarters; approved Academic Counsellors of the Management Programme with relevant experience at Study Centres; management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience; and professionals holding a Master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with a minimum of five years of experience in the relevant area after that degree.

That last category fits a serving bank officer holding a management Master’s, which is why most MBF learners use it. Two conditions apply: the experience must be in the relevant area, so a finance topic needs a finance specialist, and a guide may not be guiding more than five students at once. Where the guide is not an approved Academic Counsellor, a signed original bio-data must be attached.

Two payments of the same amount circulate in discussions of this course, and they travel in opposite directions.

The two MMPP-001 payments and the direction each one travels
PaymentWho pays whomWhat the guideline says
Guide honorariumIGNOU pays the project guideA token honorarium of Rs. 500 is paid by the University to the guide for guiding the learner. The learner is not the payer here.
Project feeThe learner pays IGNOUUniversity policy from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards sets examination, practical and project fees at Rs. 500 per course. Confirm the current amount and payment route with the Regional Centre before paying.

Two addresses

Where does an MBF synopsis go, and where does the report go?

To two separate offices, and the guideline is unusually direct about it.

The synopsis package goes to the Regional Director of the learner’s own Regional Centre, with “MMPP-001” written prominently on the envelope. The guideline names MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF together for this route. Only MBA (Online) learners use the LMS portal, and MBF is not an online-mode programme, so that route does not apply here at all. Regional Centre addresses sit under the Regional Network section of the IGNOU website.

The project report goes elsewhere: one typed copy, A4, double spaced, in a bound volume, to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered post, speed post or by hand, with “PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001” on the envelope so the Student Evaluation Division can sort it. A Project Report number, the PR number, is allotted on receipt.

Approval queries go to the Regional Director; report-status queries go to the Assistant Registrar (SED) at Maidan Garhi. Sending either to the wrong office is the fastest way to get no answer.

One document that must not be posted separately: the approved proposal, the approved proforma and the guide bio-data are not enclosures to the report. They must be bound inside it. The guideline states plainly that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted, and that a report received without those documents will be returned to the student for compliance.

Going wrong

What gets an MBF proposal sent back?

Mostly paperwork, not research quality. The guideline states that a proposal incomplete in any respect will not be accepted, and that a synopsis arriving without the duly signed original bio-data and proforma will not be entertained at all.

The detail that surprises most learners is that the evaluator records two decisions, not one. At the foot of the proforma sit two independent pairs of boxes: Synopsis Approved or Not Approved, and Supervisor Approved or Not Approved. A strong proposal can clear the first pair and stall on the second, and the remedy is specific: the learner changes the guide and submits the proposal afresh with the new guide’s signature, and it counts as a new proposal. A voluntary change of guide works the same way.

What routinely causes a return:

  1. Missing or unsigned guide bio-data. It must be signed in original, with a date. Only approved Academic Counsellors are exempt.
  2. An expired enrolment number. If the four-year maximum duration is over, re-admission comes first, and a synopsis approved on an earlier enrolment number must be approved again on the new one, or the report may not be accepted.
  3. Objectives written as conclusions. The guideline asks for objectives stated neutrally, without implicit assumptions about the findings.
  4. A title changed after approval. The final report must carry the approved title; no changes may be made at report stage.
  5. Thin methodology. Research design, nature and source of data, sample and sampling technique with a rationale for the chosen organisation, and the tools and statistical methods with their relevance to the objectives are all named as required.

On resubmission after non-approval, the revised proposal goes back with a fresh proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal, the proforma carrying the evaluator’s comments, and the Project Proposal number already allotted by the Regional Centre. The generic .shop walkthrough of the shared project course, the IGNOU MBA project guide for MMPP 1, covers the parts of this process that are identical across all six MBA programmes.

The report itself

What the MBF project report must contain

The guideline sets the length at about 50 to 60 double-spaced typed pages, not exceeding approximately 18,000 words excluding appendices and exhibits, with rational variation permitted. The prescribed structure runs: introduction and review of literature with brief details of the organisation under study; research methodology; results and discussion; summary and conclusion; recommendations; limitations and direction for further research, optional; references and bibliography; and annexures including the questionnaire.

Four further items are compulsory: a cover page carrying the student’s name, enrolment number, the guide’s name and the project title; a detailed table of contents with page numbers matching the numbered pages; the approved proposal set bound in; and a Certificate of Originality signed and dated by both student and guide. The guideline supplies that certificate’s wording and says it may be submitted in the same format.

On plagiarism the guideline requires the report to be the student’s own original work, with action as per university policy where it is not. It publishes no permitted similarity percentage, so any threshold quoted elsewhere should be confirmed with the Regional Centre rather than assumed.

Timeline

How long does the whole MMPP-001 cycle take?

Longer than most MBF learners budget for, mainly because of one waiting period they do not control. Written communication about approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre, and nothing can begin before that letter arrives: the guideline states that project work may be taken up only on approval of the synopsis.

Three further timing rules sit around it:

  • A synopsis may be submitted throughout the year, but should reach the Regional Centre after registration for MMPP-001, so that eight to nine months remain for the work.
  • If a proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than six months after registration for MMPP-001, the Regional Centre will not be responsible for disposing of it in time.
  • The project report may be submitted at any time of year. A report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared with the June term-end examination; one submitted between 1 June and 30 November, with the December term-end examination.

Working backwards, an MBF learner who wants a June-cycle result needs the approval letter in hand by roughly the turn of the year, which puts the proposal at the Regional Centre several months earlier. Session dates change by notification, so confirm the current cycle with the Regional Centre.

Questions

IGNOU MBF project: frequently asked questions

Is the MBF project code MMPP-001 or MS-100?

MMPP-001. The official guideline refers to the project course as “earlier MS-100 and revised MMPP-001”, so MS-100 is the superseded code for the same course. Informal spellings learners type, such as MMPP 1, MMPP-01, MMPP001 and MMPP1, all mean this course, but registrations, proformas and envelopes should carry MMPP-001.

Is a viva compulsory for the IGNOU MBF project?

Not automatically. The guideline states that a student may be asked to appear for a viva-voce if the evaluator so recommends, and will be duly intimated in that case. It is a possibility to prepare for, not a fixed stage. Be ready to explain why the topic was chosen, how the sample and tools were selected, and what the findings actually support.

How does an MBF learner check MMPP-001 project status?

By quoting the number allotted at that stage to the office that holds it. The Project Proposal number, or PP number, is assigned by the Regional Centre once a complete proposal is accepted and is used for approval queries there. The Project Report number, or PR number, is allotted when the report is received and is used with the Assistant Registrar (SED) at IGNOU headquarters.

Where can the official MBF project guidelines PDF be downloaded?

From the MBF programme page on ignou.ac.in, under Project Guidelines. The same file is linked from the MMPP-001 course entry on that page as the Project Manual, and it is the only document to treat as authoritative on format, proforma and submission addresses.

Are IGNOU MBF project sample PDFs safe to use?

A sample is useful for seeing how the chapters and the proforma are laid out. It cannot be used as content. The guideline requires the synopsis to be the student’s original work and the report to be free from plagiarism. A borrowed topic also locks the learner into somebody else’s study, because the approved title cannot be changed later.

Does an MBF project have to be about a bank?

Not strictly, but it should sit in the learner’s area of specialisation. The guideline offers three acceptable study types: a comprehensive case study covering a single organisation with multifunctional problem formulation, analysis and recommendations; an inter-organisational study aimed at comparison, validation of theory or a survey of management practices; or a field study, meaning an empirical study. All three work in a banking or financial services setting.
