IGNOU MBAMM Project (MMPP-001): What the Marketing Specialisation Actually Changes
The IGNOU MBAMM project is completed under course code MMPP-001, an 8 credit Project Report course placed in Semester 3 of the MBA (Marketing Management) programme. The rules match the general MBA project, but three things shift for MBAMM learners: the subject area declared, the guide’s field, and how the topic is tied to the marketing courses.
What is the IGNOU MBAMM project?
The IGNOU MBAMM project is the project work component of the Master of Business Administration (Marketing Management) programme run by the School of Management Studies at Indira Gandhi National Open University. It is registered under course code MMPP-001, titled Project Report, and carries 8 credits in Semester 3. IGNOU states that the Project Course is equivalent to two courses, but that for registration purposes MMPP-001 is treated as one course, and that no study material is supplied for it. Approval of the synopsis is necessary before project work can be taken up. Open and distance learning students of MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF send the synopsis to the Regional Director of their respective Regional Centre, while MBA (Online) learners submit through the LMS portal. The study should be on a topic preferably from the learner’s area of specialisation.
That last line is the one MBAMM learners read past too quickly. It is not decoration. It reappears on the approval proforma as a field the learner has to fill in, and it reappears in the guide eligibility rules as a condition the supervisor has to meet. Everything specific to MBAMM in this course flows from that single sentence.

Specialisation fit
Why area of specialisation is a concrete instruction, not a suggestion
IGNOU’s MMPP-001 guideline says the project study should be on a topic preferably from the learner’s area of specialisation in MBA. For a general MBA learner that phrase is loose. For an MBAMM learner it is not, because the programme itself already fixes what the area is.
The MBAMM course structure carries the MMPC core courses shared with every MBA specialisation, plus a set of MMPM courses that exist only in the Marketing Management stream. Those MMPM courses are the working definition of the marketing area. If a topic could not plausibly sit inside any of them, the evaluator has a reason to send the proposal back.
The MMPM courses that mark out the marketing area
| Course code | Course title | Semester |
|---|---|---|
| MMPM-001 | Consumer Behaviour | 3 |
| MMPM-002 | Sales Management | 3 |
| MMPM-003 | Product and Brand Management | 3 |
| MMPM-005 | Marketing of Services | 3 |
| MMPM-004 | International Marketing | 4 |
| MMPM-006 | Marketing Research | 4 |
| MMPM-007 | Integrated Marketing Communication | 4 |
| MMPM-008 | Rural Marketing | 4 |
| MMPM-009 | Retail Management | 4 |
Reading down that list is the fastest topic filter available to an MBAMM learner. A study on brand recall for a regional detergent brand sits inside MMPM-003. A study on service quality in a private bank branch sits inside MMPM-005. A study on rural distribution reach for a fast moving consumer goods company sits inside MMPM-008. A study on employee attrition in a call centre sits inside none of them, and belongs to a different specialisation.
What to write in the Subject Area box
The Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001) has a field called Subject Area near the top. IGNOU’s instructions for filling it list the options as HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, or any other area specified according to the topic selected. For an MBAMM learner working on a marketing topic, the entry is Marketing.
Practical meaning. The Subject Area, the title, and the guide’s field are read together by the evaluator. A proforma that says Marketing while the title is about employee engagement, guided by a supervisor whose experience is in human resources, presents three signals that do not agree. That is an avoidable rejection.
Timing
Which research course is available when MMPP-001 begins?
MMPP-001 sits in Semester 3 of MBAMM. So does MMPC-015, Research Methodology for Management Decisions, the core course covering research design, data collection and measurement, data presentation and analysis, and report writing. That is the methodology grounding an MBAMM learner has in hand at the moment the project starts.
MMPM-006, Marketing Research, is listed in Semester 4. It comes after the project course, not before it.
This matters because the methodology section of an MMPP-001 synopsis has to name a research design, the nature and source of data, the sample and sampling technique with a rationale for the chosen organisation, the tools and questionnaire to be used and their relevance to the objectives, the method of data collection, and the statistical tools for analysis. An MBAMM learner writing that section is drawing on MMPC-015, and on whatever marketing reading has already been done, rather than on the specialist marketing research course. Planning the synopsis with that in mind is more useful than assuming the elective will arrive in time.
Supervision
Does an MBAMM guide have to be a marketing specialist?
Effectively, yes, and the official guideline uses marketing as its own worked example.
IGNOU lists the eligibility criteria for MMPP-001 guides as management faculty in the School of Management Studies at headquarters, all approved Academic Counsellors of the Management Programme with relevant experience at the Study Centres, and management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience. It then adds professionals holding a Master’s degree in Management or allied disciplines with a minimum of five years of experience in the relevant area, and spells the condition out with a marketing case: if the topic taken up is a marketing topic, the supervisor should have five years of experience in the marketing area after their Master’s degree.
Two further conditions sit alongside it. A guide is not permitted to guide more than five students at any given point of time, and the proforma asks the supervisor to state how many students are currently being guided. IGNOU also requests project guides to restrict guiding to their core specialisation area.
Documents. If the guide is not an approved Academic Counsellor, a detailed bio-data signed in original by the guide has to travel with the synopsis, showing degrees with specialisation, awarding institution, year and percentage, and work experience in chronological order. IGNOU states that where the signed bio-data and proforma are missing, the synopsis will not be entertained.
Money
Two amounts of Rs. 500 that get mixed up
MBAMM learners regularly read one figure and assume it is the other. They move in opposite directions.
| Amount | Who pays | Who receives | What it is |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rs. 500 per course | The learner | IGNOU | Exam, practical and project fee, applicable from the January 2023 admission cycle onwards |
| Rs. 500 | IGNOU | The project guide | Token honorarium paid by the University for guiding the learner |
A guide who asks a learner for the honorarium has misread the arrangement. The University pays it. Separately, the MBAMM fee structure published by IGNOU lists Rs. 16,000 per semester for the first, second and fourth semesters and Rs. 18,000 for the third, against a full programme fee of Rs. 66,000. The third semester is the one in which MMPP-001 is placed. IGNOU does not label the difference as a project charge, so treat the two as separate facts rather than one explanation.
Routing
Where an MBAMM synopsis and report actually go
MBAMM is named directly in the routing instruction, so there is no need to guess. The route depends on mode of study, not on specialisation.
- Register for MMPP-001 first. IGNOU advises submitting the proposal to the Regional Centre after registration, so that at least eight to nine months remain to finish the work before the fourth semester expires.
- Send the Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001), one copy of the proposal and the signed bio-data of the guide to the Regional Director of your Regional Centre. Write MMPP-001 prominently on the envelope. MBA (Online) learners submit through the LMS portal instead.
- The Regional Centre assigns a Project Proposal Number (PP. No.) once the proposal is accepted as complete. Quote it in all later correspondence.
- Written communication on approval or non-approval is issued within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. Work begins only after that communication arrives.
- Submit one typed copy of the report, A4 size, double spaced, as a bound volume, to the Registrar (SED), IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, New Delhi 110068, by registered or speed post or by hand. Mark the envelope PROJECT REPORT-MMPP-001. A Project Report Number (PR. No.) is then allotted.
The approved proposal, the approved proforma and the guide’s bio-data must be bound into the report, not stapled. IGNOU states that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted, and that a report received without any of these documents will be returned for compliance. The Certificate of Originality, signed and dated by both the student and the guide, is part of the same set.
Several pages describing the MBAMM project say the report is uploaded online as a single PDF. For open and distance learning MBAMM learners, the current MMPP-001 guideline hosted on ignou.ac.in does not say that. It routes the bound report to the Registrar (SED) by post or by hand, and reserves portal submission for MBA (Online) learners. Because routing instructions do change, confirm the version in force for your admission cycle with your Regional Centre before posting anything.
Deadlines
Is 31 May a last date for the IGNOU MBAMM project?
No. Those dates describe when a result is declared, not when a submission closes.
The MMPP-001 guideline states that the project report can be submitted any time throughout the year, and that a report submitted between 1 December and 31 May has its result declared along with the June Term-End Examinations, while a report submitted between 1 June and 30 November has its result declared with the December Term-End Examinations. The synopsis, similarly, can be submitted throughout the year. What is time bound is the maximum duration of the programme, and the caution that where a proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than six months after registration for MMPP-001, the Regional Centre will not be responsible for timely disposal.
BK Sahni, who has guided 5,00,000 students till date, points out that this is where MBAMM learners lose whole terms: the date is read as a cut off, the submission is rushed to meet it, and the real constraint, the four year maximum duration and the two to three month approval cycle before work can even begin, goes unplanned.
Rejection
Why MBAMM proposals come back unapproved
The proforma carries two decisions in its office use section, recorded separately: Synopsis approved or not approved, and Supervisor approved or not approved. A learner can clear one and fail the other. IGNOU states that where the proposed guide is not approved, the student has to change the guide and submit the project proposal afresh with the new guide’s signature, and that it will be treated as a new proposal.
- The Subject Area, the title and the guide’s experience point at different fields.
- The guide’s signed bio-data is missing, unsigned, or undated, and the guide is not an approved Academic Counsellor.
- Objectives are written with the conclusion already assumed inside them. IGNOU asks for objectives expressed in a neutral manner, without implicit assumptions about the findings.
- The supervisor is already guiding five students.
- The learner has taken re-admission after the maximum duration ended, and the synopsis approved on the earlier enrolment number was never re-approved on the new one. IGNOU warns that the project report may not be accepted in that case.
- The final report carries a title different from the approved one. IGNOU states the final report must be on the title approved by the evaluator, with no changes at submission.
On non-approval, the revised proposal goes back with a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal, the proforma bearing the evaluator’s comments, and the PP. No. allotted earlier. Learners working through the proposal stage for the first time will find the field by field walkthrough in the MMPP-1 project synopsis guide useful, and the wider course rules that apply to every MBA specialisation are collected in the IGNOU MBA project MMPP-1 guide.
Questions
IGNOU MBAMM project: frequently asked questions
Is MMPP-001 the same as MMPP 1, MMPP-01, MMPP1 and MMPP001?
Yes. MMPP-001 is the canonical form used by IGNOU. MMPP 1, MMPP-01, MMPP1 and MMPP001 are informal spellings of the same MBAMM project course. Use MMPP-001 on the proforma and on the envelope.
Is the MBAMM project different from the general IGNOU MBA project?
The course code, credits, format, word limit and submission route are the same. What differs is the field the work sits in. MBAMM learners declare Marketing as the subject area, choose a topic that belongs to the marketing courses, and need a guide with experience in the marketing area.
How many marks does the MBAMM project carry, and how is it split?
The MMPP-001 guideline published on ignou.ac.in does not state a mark split for the report and the viva. Figures circulating on third party pages are not traceable to that document. Confirm the current evaluation scheme with your Regional Centre or programme guide rather than relying on those numbers.
Is a viva-voce compulsory for MMPP-001?
No. IGNOU states that a student may be asked to appear for a viva-voce if the evaluator so recommends, and that the student will be duly intimated in that case. It is not automatic for every MBAMM learner.
Can the topic be changed after the synopsis is approved?
No. IGNOU states that the final project report should necessarily be on the title approved by the evaluator and that no changes could be made while submitting the final report. A genuinely different topic means a fresh proposal.
What are the three types of study allowed?
IGNOU lists a comprehensive case study covering a single organisation with multifunctional problem formulation, analysis and recommendations; an inter-organisational study aimed at comparison, validation of theory or a survey of management practices; and a field study, meaning an empirical study. All three work for a marketing topic.
Where can the official MMPP-001 project guidelines be downloaded?
The project manual is linked from the MBAMM programme page on the IGNOU website, under Project Guidelines, and again from the MMPP-001 course entry in the course structure on the same page.
Verify before you post. Course structures, fees and submission routes are revised by notification.
