IGNOU MBAFM Project: Course Code, Approval Chain and How MMPP-001 Is Actually Graded

The IGNOU MBAFM project is MMPP-001, the eight-credit project course every MBA (Financial Management) learner completes in Semester 3. There is no separate MBAFM project code. The specialisation shows up in three places instead: the topic, the Subject Area declared on the proforma, and the guide’s own area of expertise.

Every figure on this page is taken from the January 2026 Student Handbook and Prospectus for the MBA specialisation programmes and from the MMPP-001 project guidelines published by IGNOU. Fees, dates and routing are revised by notification, so confirm the current position with your Regional Centre before you post anything.

What the IGNOU MBAFM project is, and why it has no separate course code

The IGNOU MBAFM project refers to MMPP-001, the project course prescribed for the Master of Business Administration (Financial Management), a programme of the School of Management Studies at Indira Gandhi National Open University. MMPP-001 carries eight credits and is treated as equivalent to two courses, although for registration purposes it is counted as a single course. The same code applies to MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF learners: the project guidelines are issued once and list all six programmes together. No study material is supplied for the course. The project must be built on a topic preferably drawn from the learner’s area of specialisation, which for MBAFM means finance. A synopsis has to be approved in writing before project work begins, and the final report must carry the exact title the evaluator approved.

This is the first thing worth settling, because a large share of MBAFM learners go looking for an “MBAFM project code” that does not exist. Searching for one wastes weeks. The code on your re-registration form is MMPP-001, the same string an MBAMM or MBAOM learner sees, and the guidelines document that governs your project is the shared MMPP-001 document.

What is genuinely different for MBAFM is not the paperwork. It is the alignment requirement running underneath it, described in the next section.

The MMPP-001 proforma carries two separate approval decisions, one for the synopsis and one for the supervisor. A finance topic paired with a non-finance guide can clear the first and fail the second.

The part that is specific to MBAFM

The three places your MBAFM project has to say “Finance”

Generic MMPP-001 advice stops at “choose a topic in your specialisation”. The official guidelines go further than that, in two instructions most guide pages never quote.

Where does the Subject Area go on the MMPP-001 proforma?

The Subject Area is a short field near the top of the Proforma for Approval of Project Proposal (MMPP-001), and for an MBAFM learner it should read Finance or Accounting and Finance. IGNOU’s own instruction for filling this field uses a finance example: if the project is on the financial performance of a named company, the Subject Area is Finance. The instruction then lists the permitted buckets, which include HRM and OB, Accounting and Finance, Operations Management and Information System, Marketing, Corporate Management, and Any Other. This comes from the instructions for filling up the Proforma for Approval of Synopsis inside the MMPP-001 guidelines. In practice it means the evaluator reads a declared subject area before reading a single line of your synopsis, so a finance topic filed under Corporate Management invites an avoidable question.

Does an MBAFM guide have to be a finance specialist?

Yes, in substance. The MMPP-001 guidelines set a general eligibility bar and then add a specialisation note on top of it. Eligible supervisors are management faculty at the School of Management Studies headquarters, approved Academic Counsellors of the Management Programme with relevant experience, management faculty with five years of postgraduate teaching experience, or professionals holding a Master’s degree in management or an allied discipline with at least five years of experience in the relevant area. The guidelines then advise learners to select guides who are active professionals in the area of the selected topic, stating directly that a finance topic calls for a finance specialist, and they ask project guides to restrict their guiding to their own core specialisation area. That note is why the proforma has a separate Supervisor approval box. For MBAFM this is the single most common structural mismatch: a willing counsellor whose bio-data is entirely marketing or human resources, attached to a ratio analysis project.

How does the topic itself carry the specialisation?

MMPP-001 permits exactly three shapes of study. Each one holds finance work perfectly well, but they demand different data and different defences. Choosing the shape before writing the objectives saves a round of revision.

The three permitted MMPP-001 study types, read for a finance topic
Official study typeWhat it looks like in financeWhat the evaluator will look for
Comprehensive case study, covering a single organisation or a multifunctional area problem, with formulation, analysis and recommendationsFinancial performance, working capital position, or capital structure of one named company across several yearsA stated problem rather than a description, and recommendations that follow from the numbers
Inter-organisational study aimed at comparison, validation of theory, or a survey of management practicesTwo or more banks, insurers or listed firms compared on the same ratios or the same disclosure practiceComparable periods, comparable line items, and a stated reason for choosing those organisations
Field study, meaning an empirical studyInvestor behaviour, adoption of digital payment services, or perception of a financial product, collected through a questionnaireSample and sampling technique, the questionnaire itself as an annexure, and statistical tools matched to the objectives

Whichever shape you pick, the objectives carry the weight. The official guidelines require objectives stated in neutral terms, without assumptions built in about what the findings will be. The sample set printed in the guidelines opens with a finance objective, beginning “To study the financial performance”, followed by objectives that explore, analyse the factors affecting, and investigate the influence of something. Those four verbs are a usable template for an MBAFM proposal.

The grading question nobody answers

How is MMPP-001 graded, and why is it unlike every other MBAFM course?

MMPP-001 is evaluated on the project report alone. For the other 27 courses in the MBAFM programme, the result is built from two components: assignments carrying 30 per cent weightage and the term-end examination carrying 70 per cent. The January 2026 Student Handbook and Prospectus states plainly that for the project course the evaluation is based only on the project report submitted by the student. There is no MMPP-001 assignment to submit and no MMPP-001 theory paper to sit. The approved synopsis has to be bound into the report at final submission, which is the only way the earlier approval enters the assessment at all.

Three consequences follow, and they matter more than most format advice.

  • The fee is paid with the examination form, not on its own. A project evaluation fee of Rs. 500 is submitted along with the term-end examination form for the semester in which you intend to submit the report. Theory courses attract Rs. 200 each. Learners who post the report without filing the examination form for that session frequently find the evaluation stalled.
  • There is no re-evaluation route. IGNOU allows re-evaluation of term-end theory answer scripts on payment of the prescribed fee, but the prospectus states there is no provision for re-evaluation of project reports and dissertations. Whatever grade the report earns is the grade.
  • There is no improvement route either. The improvement in division or class facility is permissible only in theory papers. Projects, practicals, workshops and assignments are excluded by name.

Grades are reported on the letter scale used across the programme: A for 80 per cent and above, B for 60 to 79.9, C for 50 to 59.9, D for 40 to 49.9, and E below 40. An overall C grade is needed to qualify a course.

Two amounts of Rs. 500, moving in opposite directions. The University pays the project guide a token honorarium of Rs. 500 for guiding a learner. Separately, the learner pays a project evaluation fee of Rs. 500 to the University with the term-end examination form. Same figure, different payer, different purpose. Competitor pages routinely merge the two into one sentence, which is why some MBAFM learners arrive believing they owe their guide Rs. 500.

BK Sahni, who has guided 5,00,000 students till date, notes that the report-only evaluation is exactly why an MBAFM synopsis deserves more time than learners give it: with no assignment marks and no re-evaluation to fall back on, the approved title and the approved methodology decide almost everything before the writing starts.

Routing

Where does the MBAFM synopsis go, and where does the report go?

These are two different destinations, and mixing them is a common and expensive error. The synopsis goes to your Regional Centre. The finished report goes to headquarters.

Older guidance says something different, and it is out of date. A number of third party pages still tell MBAFM learners to post the synopsis to the Coordinator (Projects), School of Management Studies, IGNOU, Maidan Garhi. The current MMPP-001 guidelines, reproduced in the January 2026 Student Handbook and Prospectus for the MBA specialisation programmes, route the synopsis for ODL learners of MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF to the Regional Director of the respective Regional Centre instead. Regional Centre email addresses are published on ignou.ac.in under Regional Network. Treat the Regional Centre route as current and confirm it with your own Regional Centre before posting.

Once the Regional Centre accepts a complete proposal it assigns a Project Proposal Number, unique to the learner, which should be quoted in all later correspondence. Written communication about approval or non-approval is sent within two to three months of the proposal reaching the Regional Centre. When the report is later submitted, a PR Number is allotted, and that is the reference to quote with the Student Evaluation Division.

What goes wrong

Why MBAFM project proposals get sent back

Non-approval is not a verdict on your finance knowledge. Most returns are procedural, and every item below is drawn from the compliance conditions written into the guidelines themselves.

  1. The guide’s bio-data is missing or unsigned. If a learner fails to submit the bio-data and proforma bearing original signatures, the synopsis is not entertained at all. Approved Academic Counsellors are the exception, since bio-data is not required for them.
  2. The guide’s area does not match a finance topic. The Supervisor box on the proforma is decided separately from the Synopsis box. If the guide is not approved, the learner has to find a new guide and submit the proposal afresh on a new proforma, and it counts as a new proposal.
  3. The guide is already at capacity. A supervisor is not permitted to guide more than five learners at any one time, and the proforma asks for that number in writing.
  4. Objectives carry an assumed conclusion. Objectives have to be neutral. “To prove that the company’s liquidity improved” states the finding in advance; “To analyse the factors affecting the company’s liquidity position” does not.
  5. The title drifts between synopsis and report. The final report must be on the title the evaluator approved. No change is permitted at final submission, which is a real constraint if you were planning to switch companies once the data proved thin.
  6. The approved proposal is stapled into the report rather than bound. The guidelines state that a project with a stapled proposal will not be accepted. The approved proposal, approved proforma and guide’s bio-data have to be bound in.
  7. The Certificate of Originality is missing a signature or a date. It must be signed by both the learner and the guide, with places and dates. A report arriving without any of the required documents is returned for compliance.

If a proposal is not approved, the comments for reformulating it are communicated to the learner. The revised proposal then goes back with a fresh Project Proposal Proforma, a copy of the rejected proposal, and the proforma bearing the evaluator’s comments and the Project Proposal Number allotted by the Regional Centre. Sending only a corrected synopsis, without that paperwork trail, restarts the wait.

Re-admitted MBAFM learners, read this one. If the four year maximum duration of the programme has lapsed and you have taken re-admission, an approval obtained on your earlier enrolment number does not carry over. The guidelines require the approval to be sought again on the new enrolment number, and warn that the project report may not be accepted if this is not done.

Sequencing

How long does the MBAFM project actually take?

The guidelines do not fix a last date for the synopsis, but they do fix an expectation. The proposal may be submitted at any time after registration for MMPP-001, and the reasoning given is that a learner should have at least eight to nine months to complete the project work before the fourth semester expires. If a proposal reaches the Regional Centre more than six months after MMPP-001 registration, the Regional Centre states it will not be responsible for timely disposal.

A workable sequence for an MBAFM learner registering MMPP-001 in Semester 3
StageOfficial position
Register MMPP-001Semester 3. The MBAFM fee for the third semester is higher than the other three semesters because it carries the eight credit project
Finalise topic and guideBefore drafting. The proposal is prepared in consultation with the guide
Post the synopsisWithin six months of registering MMPP-001, to keep the Regional Centre’s disposal commitment intact
Wait for the decisionWritten communication within two to three months of receipt at the Regional Centre
Carry out the studyOnly after written approval. Work done before approval is at risk if the proposal is reformulated
Submit the reportAny time through the year, with the Rs. 500 evaluation fee filed alongside the term-end examination form for that session
ResultJune term-end examinations for reports submitted 1 December to 31 May; December term-end examinations for reports submitted 1 June to 30 November
Viva-voceOnly if the evaluator recommends it. The learner is intimated in that case

Work backwards from that table rather than forwards from today. Two to three months of proposal evaluation sitting inside an eight to nine month window is the constraint that decides whether an MBAFM learner finishes on time. For the wider procedure that applies to every MBA specialisation, the complete IGNOU MBA project guide for MMPP-001 covers the report structure and formatting requirements in more detail than this page does.

Verify before you post. The project guidelines, the proforma and the Certificate of Originality format are published in the MBA specialisation Student Handbook and Prospectus on ignou.ac.in, and course material for the programme is hosted on eGyanKosh. Fees, routing and timelines are revised by notification. Confirm the current position with your Regional Centre or programme guide before acting on any figure quoted here.

Quick answers

IGNOU MBAFM project: frequently asked questions

Is there a separate project code for MBAFM, different from MMPP-001?

No. MMPP-001 is the project course for MBA, MBAFM, MBAHM, MBAMM, MBAOM and MBF alike. Learners search for the code in several informal forms, including MMPP-1, MMPP 001, MMPP-01 and MMPP1, and all of them point to the same eight credit project course. The canonical form to write on your envelope and proforma is MMPP-001.

How many credits is the MBAFM project and which semester does it fall in?

Eight credits, placed in Semester 3 of the MBAFM structure. It is equivalent to two courses in workload and fee, but is treated as one course for registration. The MBAFM programme totals 28 courses and 116 credits: 19 core courses of four credits each, eight specialisation courses of four credits each, and the eight credit project.

Can an MBAFM learner choose a marketing or human resources topic?

The guidelines say the project should be on a topic preferably from your area of specialisation, which for MBAFM means finance, and they separately advise selecting a guide who specialises in the topic area. A non-finance topic is not automatically rejected by rule, but it weakens the specialisation link the evaluator is reading for and complicates the guide match. Discuss any departure with your guide and your Regional Centre first.

Does the MBAFM project have an assignment component?

No. Assignments carry 30 per cent weightage and the term-end examination 70 per cent for the theory courses in the programme, but the project course is evaluated on the submitted project report alone. There is no assignment to write for MMPP-001 and no theory paper to sit.

Is a viva-voce compulsory for the MBAFM project?

No. A learner may be asked to appear for a viva-voce only if the evaluator recommends it, and the learner is duly intimated in that case. Plan for the possibility, but it is not a fixed stage in the process.

Can an MBAFM project report be sent for re-evaluation if the grade is low?

No. The prospectus states there is no provision for re-evaluation of project reports, dissertations, assignments, practical answer scripts, field work journals or internships. Improvement in division or class is also restricted to theory papers, so projects are excluded there as well. This is the strongest practical reason to get the synopsis and the methodology right the first time.

How do I check the status of my MBAFM project report?

Quote the PR Number allotted at submission and contact the Assistant Registrar (SED) at IGNOU, Maidan Garhi, by email at projects@ignou.ac.in or on 011-29571324 or 011-29571321. For anything relating to the approval of the project proposal, the Regional Director of your Regional Centre is the correct address, not the Student Evaluation Division.
